Liposuction has traditionally fallen within the woman’s domain, but male liposuction is gaining popularity. In 2005, 12% of all lipo procedures were performed on men, suggesting that some of the stigma associated with male liposuction may be ebbing.

While male liposuction is more commonplace, men should be aware that the cost of their procedures may be higher than the cost of comparable procedures for women. Increased costs are due to the fact that the larger sizes of men’s bodies mean more fat, and the fat is more fibrous than the fat on women’s bodies, which makes it difficult for lipo specialists to remove. Also, men tend to have liposuction performed on areas such as chest, abdomen, and love handles that naturally contain more fibrous fat.

To prepare for liposuction, there are certain medications and supplements you should stop taking to avoid complications with the anesthesia or surgery. These range from common medications such as aspirin and birth control pills to diet pills to Vitamin E and ginseng supplements. A complete alphabetized list is provided here.

It’s crucial that lipo specialists are aware of every medication and supplement that their patients are taking, including over-the-counter pills. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue use prior to surgery and specify how long you should avoid that type of medication.

While recommendations from friends and/or relatives are excellent ways to find qualified lipo specialists in your area, you may also turn to the Internet to find a professional to perform your procedure. A good place to begin your search is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ website. With the group’s online surgeon finder, you can quickly search for ASPS members in the U.S. and abroad. According to the ASPS’s website, members meet the following qualifications:

  • Has at least six years of training and experience in surgery, with three years specifically in plastic surgery
  • Is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Operates only in accredited medical facilities
  • Adheres to a strict code of ethics
  • Fulfills continuing education requirements, including patient safety techniques
  • Will be your partner, working to achieve your goals
